A BiPAP machine is a great option
A CPAP machine delivers constant pressure to your upper airwary, and is appropriate for obstructive sleep apnea. A Bilevel positive airway pressure (or BiPAP) machine builds to a higher pressure when you inhale and decreases to a lower pressure when you exhale. This device is most appropriate for central sleep apnea, a condition where the brain loses its drive to breathe.
how does it work?
A BiPAP device looks and fits very much like a CPAP device, but the functionality is different. This machine works to identify and the weak breathing pattern of central sleep apnea thereby reducing the stress that causes wakefulness and increasing the number of successful REM cycles. Some BiPAP devices can be set to automatically deliver a breath if the device detects you haven't taken one after so many seconds.
what to expect
Bilevel positive airway pressure machines (such as BiPAP) have two air pressure levels, one for breathing in and one for breathing out. Air pressure for breathing in is usually set higher than air pressure for breathing out. You will have to spend the night at a sleep laboratory to find the air pressure levels that work best for you.
You may find BiPAP more comfortable than CPAP because you can breathe out against a lower air pressure. As a result, you may be more likely to continue the treatment.
