Listening Provides Perspective

According to Luxley Daniels, RN, nurse manager at the Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View emergency department, taking the time to listen to patients is the way to provide exceptional care. Daniels knows first-hand how important listening to patients can be. He found his professional calling eight years ago through personal experience with illness.

"My wife was terminally ill with breast cancer, and I saw the caring way nurses treated her during chemotherapy," Daniels said. "It inspired me, and I truly enjoy providing one-on-one holistic care to patients."

As a manager, Daniels looks for people who are naturally compassionate on his staff and help people on a personal level. To him, these are the kind of nurses that set the highest quality standards.

Faith as a Driving Force

"As a nurse, my primary goal is to treat residents with the utmost respect," said Joyce Williams, RN. "As a nurse manager, I now ensure that my staff is doing the same."

When Williams became a Bon Secours nurse in 1976, her goal was to help people in need. Now, as the director of nursing at St. Francis Nursing Center, her mission remains the same.

"The secret ingredient for a caring staff and positive environment is a foundation of faith," said Williams. "Bon Secours helped me go to school to become a nurse and had faith in me as a leader. In turn, I believe in myself and my team. That’s how we provide the best care possible."
