The stereotactic biopsy can be performed in conjunction with a scheduled mammogram and is a much easier on a woman’s body by using ultrasound-imaging guidance to accurately pinpoint the suspicious tissue. With this method, doctors can biopsy a wide range of breast abnormalities, from microcalcifications (tiny deposits of calcium within the breast) to lumps on the surface of the breast, both of which may indicate cancer.

The patients who are most at risk for osteoporosis and who benefit most from this kind of diagnostic testing are post-menopausal women. The results of the test may show that if a patient needs treatment for osteoporosis.
