good help; Bon Secours Hampton Roads

The team came together and prayed.

Recently, the Labor and Delivery team at Mary Immaculate Hospital provided an incredible moment of good help to a family in need. The team admitted a patient laboring with her third child three weeks before her due date. The patient and her husband planned to have the cord blood collected at delivery. Unfortunately, because she was not expected to deliver so soon, the kit from the cord blood bank was not due to arrive at her home until the next day. By then, it would be too late for the collection.

Julie Mims contacted the banking center to see if there was an alternative process. There was, but it required a certain type of heparin. Unfortunately, the pharmacy did not stock this specific type. By this time, labor was moving quickly. Curtis Smith, Director of Pharmacy, and his team began calling other pharmacies, searching for the heparin. They came up empty handed.

Mechelle Jones, Missy Jones, and Angie Randolph began to call area Labor units, but were not successful. Before the last area Labor & Delivery unit was called, the team came together and prayed. Sentara Williamsburg was called, and the needed heparin was indeed in stock.

A teammate rushed to pick up the heparin, and the patient continued to labor. Dr. Kathy O'Connell stayed with the patient praying, waiting and encouraging. She delivered a healthy girl within 8 minutes of the heparin arriving.

The team shares they believe the mother was able to wait because it was important to this family to have the cord blood. Their oldest son has been fighting cancer for most of his life. The stem cells collected will be used in a special treatment program to help the young child.

The Labor and Delivery team are clearly committed to high quality, individualized care, ensuring Bon Secours is the top tier health care system in the Mid-Atlantic!
