good help; Bon Secours Hampton Roads

"About 20 minutes later, I pulled off the side of the road and cried my heart out"

Bon Secours Home Care nurse Jennifer Johnson, RN, was preparing to leave her patient’s home when a young mother rushed through the door with her toddler in her arms. Screaming and in a panic, she handed her lifeless baby to the nurse. The mother reported that the baby had been running a fever and gone into seizures. Though 911 had been summoned, the mother instinctively knew her baby was out of time.

According to Johnson, the baby boy’s eyes were rolled back and he was blue. She quickly administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She recalls, “I only gave him two resuscitative breaths and he came back. He never made a sound. He was very hot. I kept rubbing his face and talking to him to help him focus. After a short while, he began to look around and respond.” The child, who was less than 24 months old, had never had seizures before. Johnson said, “I had been in my patient’s home about 40 minutes. I was standing at the door and turning to leave when my patient saw the women running across the field with the child.

Apparently, someone saw the Bon Secours car parked outside the house and pointed out that there must be a nurse in the house.” The rescue squad arrived and transported the boy to a local emergency room.

Johnson recalled, “God put me in the right place at the right time. I was calm and collected through the whole thing, and then about 20 minutes later, I pulled off the side of the road and cried my heart out.”
